This paper considers China’s Lake Tai Water Clean-up Project as a quasi-natural experiment and adopts a geographic regression discontinuity method to examine how and to what extent regional environmental cooperation can influence border-region firms’ water pollution. It is shown that the wastewater discharge intensity of firms located inside the co-governance area is, on average, much lower than that of firms located outside the co-governance area. Such effects are more profound in heavily polluting, state-owned, young, and large- and medium-sized firms. Further analysis shows that firms in border-regions respond to regional environmental cooperation mainly through front-end cleaner production rather than relocating or using end-of-pipe treatment.

Professor Yanrui Wu is an economist specializing in development economics, energy and environment, and economics of innovation. He has published extensively in these fields (with a total of 268 publications including 161 refereed journal articles - 133 SSCI/SCI indexed ones and 6 authored books). He is one of the highly cited economists specializing in Chinese economy research (with more than 11,000 google citation counts). His work has appeared in Energy Economics (JIF: 12.8), Journal of International Business Studies (JIF: 11.6), Technovation (JIF: 12.5), Journal of Environmental Management (JIF: 8.7), China Economic Review (JIF: 6.8), Environmental and Resource Economics (JIF: 5.9), and Economic Modelling (ABDC: A/JIF: 4.7). Prof Wu is an associate editor of Asian Pacific Economic Literature, China Economic Review and Journal of Chinese Economic and Business Studies. He is also on the editorial board of Asia and Global Economy and China Agricultural Economic Review. He served as the Head of the Department of Economics at the University of Western Australia, and President of the Chinese Economic Studies Association of Australia.
